Why is speed important?

In track events the fastest wins of course, however in team sports based around speed, one aspect of outrunning your opponent or getting to the ball first is your speed.

The faster you are, the more likely it is that you will get to where you want to go before your opponents.

Team sports require you to be able to back up your speed, meaning you need to be able to repeat your speed time and time again within the game, effectively managing your recovery between these bursts of speed and then be able to get to the speeds you require on demand, quite often over lengthy periods of time.
